How Much Coffee Do They Drink on the Death Star?
Being a loyal member of the Empire’s not an easy task, let’s face it. Between the plotting and the nasty “dark side” stuff and the blowing-up of planets, there’s not really a lot of room for downtime.
So, we joked that the residents of the Death Star would probably need a lot of coffee to get through the day. But then that got us thinking; just how much would they drink? And how would they drink coffee in space anyway? So, we did a little maths, and a lot of research… and came up with an answer.

If the thought of waiting in a line with 1,161,292 other crew members for your daily cup of coffee makes you cringe, then think again! The Death Star cantina, based on the average number of coffee shops per population density in the US, would be home to roughly 160 coffee shops. Of these coffee shops, 41 would be (Death) Starbucks, 24 would be Dunkin’ Donuts, and 96 would independents.
That all adds up to about the same number of coffee shops as San Diego!
How Do They Take Their Coffee on the Death Star?
Obviously, most coffees on the Death Star are taken on the dark side (ha!), but there are a few brave souls who incur the Emperor’s wrath by adding milk and foam to their coffees. Lattes and cappuccinos are very popular, believe it or not, as are iced coffees.
How Do They Drink Coffee in Space?
On the Death Star itself, drinking coffee wouldn’t be a problem (all they need is a Stormtrooper Keep Cup!), but spare a thought for those poor Tie Fighter pilots, never able to grab a coffee on the job.
However – thankfully – NASA has solved the problem of drinking in zero gravity. All you need is a specially-designed space cup, and physics does the rest!
What’s the Best Coffee in the Empire?
Coffee is mentioned in Star Wars. Funnily enough, Emperor Palpatine owned several farms on various planets, which produce coffee beans (the best in the galaxy, naturally) so this is almost certainly what they’d be drinking on the Death Star. Even Java … sorry Jabba … the Hutt has got in on the act, serving the Emperor’s “vine coffee” in his palace.
Make like a Stormtrooper and drink your coffee out of one of our awesome Star Wars Keep Cups and may the froth be with you!
