How Does A Chemex Work?
Pour-over is arguably the simplest method of creating a great cup of coffee. All you need to do is arrange your grounds into a conical funnel, alongside the appropriate filter paper, and pour over hot water. Gravity will take care of the rest, forcing the water down through the grounds so that it absorbs all of their wonderful flavours and aromas along the way. What eventually emerges from the bottom of the dripper will be freshly-brewed coffee.
How Does It Compare To Other Coffee Makers?
Naturally, coffee drippers are available in a range of shapes and sizes. Some of them are lightweight, and designed to sit directly atop your cup. Others are larger, and incorporate other devices, too. Chemex are a company who specialise in the latter sort of dripper. Their eye-catching range of glass coffee pots incorporate both a funnel and a server into the same glass shape, which will sit handily on your kitchen counter until called upon. Each Chemex coffee maker comes with thick, tough glass walls that’ll preserve the temperature of your coffee, and absorb all of the knocks and scrapes your kitchen might inflict!
What’s The History Behind Chemex?
While we might think of high-quality home-brewed coffee as a recent development, Chemex’s history extends back to the middle of last century. The first coffeemaker bearing the Chemex name was the work of an inventor and chemist named Dr. Peter Schlumbohm, a native of Germany with more than three-hundred separate patents to his name. His philosophy was to make everyday objects “more functional, attractive, and enjoyable to use.” In the Chemex coffeemaker, he arguably created his magnum opus. It even earned a position in the Museum of Modern Art in 1943, in an exhibition of the world’s best design.
Schlumbohm’s background in chemistry afforded him an advantage over his rivals. He understood many of the chemical reactions that contribute to great coffee, as well as those that typically inhibit it. Inspired by the impermeable glass labware he dealt with throughout his life, Sclumbohm would create the distinctive hourglass shape of the Chemex 8-cup coffeemaker. The neck of the glass was shielded with a wooden collar and a rawhide tie, allowing coffee-lovers to easily pick it up and pour their favourite drink. The design was so perfectly elegant that it’s remained largely unchanged to this day.
