Coffee is a drink that’s capable of an astonishingly diverse flavours and textures. These are achievable through growing the crop in different climates, and according to different methods. The way in which it’s processed and roasted, too, has a considerable impact. And even once we’ve ground the roasted beans, we can alter the drink considerably by simply choosing a different method of brewing. Fortunately, we’ve a variety of different methods available. Each of them, however, abides by the same principle: the grounds are allowed to soak into hot water, and then they’re removed from said hot water using a filter. The result? The drink we all recognise.
Perhaps the simplest means of doing this is with the help of gravity. That’s the pour-over method. On this page, you’ll find a myriad of different pour-over devices. Though they might vary considerably in appearance, each of them creates their coffee using largely the same principle.

How does pour-over coffee work?
Pour-over works by placing grounds within a special conical filter paper, which is in turn placed within a funnel that sits atop a container. When hot water is poured over the top of the grounds, it can then slowly soak downward through them – absorbing all of the great coffee flavours as it does so. In order that the coffee doesn’t take on the paper taste of the filter, it’s sometimes necessary to soak the latter with water before commencing the process.
Pour-over coffee is preferred by many because it’s so astonishingly simple. There are no mechanisms that can go wrong, and there’s no work to be done pulling levers pushing plungers – just sit back and let gravity do the work!
Moreover, drippers are usually much easier to clean than cafetieres and aeropress systems, as they contain just a simple, smooth surface that can be easily wiped. The filter (which is usually the most difficult component to maintain in other systems) is entirely disposable, meaning that once you’re done you can simply bin it along with your used grounds.
What different sorts of pour-over and dripper system are there?
Pour-over systems come in several different sorts. The smallest and simplest of these sit directly on top of your cup, eliminating the need from an extra container. Some of these are able to detect when they’re in position and open a valve to allow the coffee to drain through. This allows you to pour the coffee before putting it into position on the top of your cup!
Then there are Chemex’s attractive and durable drippers, which as well as being functional will look the part in your kitchen. Both the dripper and the pot below are shaped from the same piece of glass, making the design incredibly robust and elegant. Simply slot a suitable filter-paper in the top, and you’re ready to go!
Finally, there are modular systems, like Hario’s incredibly popular V60. These bring together many different components, which you’re able to swap out as you see fit. You’re thereby able to make incremental upgrades to your system, and tailor your experience precisely to your coffee-making needs.
