What Are Coffee Syrups?
When you walk into a new café, the first thing you’ll do is check the menu and it’s always eyes widening exciting to find new drink choices you’ve never tasted. This is especially common in the holiday season when cafes seemingly come up with exciting flavour additions to your favourite drink. Sure coffee is amazing on its own but sometimes you fancy something a little sweeter and coffee syrups provide this additional extra while still providing your much needed caffeine fix.
The secret behind these sensational tastes however are coffee syrups. Coffee syrups, as you might expect are liquids, that come in a variety of tastes and can be added to your drink to heighten the coffee blend. These syrups are not limited to your coffee however you can also drizzle them over cakes and ice cream when cooking up some sweet treats.
Coffee syrups tend to be used more in those colder months as we seemingly develop as sweeter tooth but can be used whenever you like.
Coffee Sauces vs Coffee Syrups
Coffee syrups are light liquids that blend well into your coffee. They are all about adding flavouring to your drink and can be used with hot or cold beverages. They change the taste of the complete drink. Coffee sauces are thicker liquids that tend to be added to the top of hot drinks to give them a sweet taste. They act like chocolate sprinkles on a hot chocolate. They don’t change the flavour of your drink but they add a sweet taste. An example of a coffee sauce would be the caramel coating on top of your latte.
How To Use Coffee Syrups
Coffee syrups can be used in a variety of ways. They can be used for hot or cold beverage, whether your drink is coffee based or not, or you can use them for baking. A lot of the same coffee syrups can be used for topping off cakes but fruity syrups can also be used in mixing cocktails. Just remember the difference between sauces and syrups if using for cooking – sauces are better toppings as they are thicker whereas syrups are useful for adding throughout flavouring.
When using syrups in your coffee it’s important to remember a little goes a long way. 2 tablespoons of syrup is recommended for an 8 ounce cup. Stir the liquid into your drink and taste before adding any sugar or sweeteners, as you may require less when using a syrup.
